Village Mapping Exercise

In addition to the baseline survey, the CIMMYT team conducted a village mapping exercise in each of the surveyed locations. This participatory action research tool is conducted at the village level, where participants hand draw a map of their village guided by community representatives. This tool allows researchers to “hand over the stick” to the community, and provides an opportunity to develop a common understanding of the village territory and identify various land uses. The CIMMYT field team conducted a total of 65 village mapping exercises following a prepared guideline.

In each location, 4-6 participants were selected wherein the CIMMYT facilitator guided the group through a checklist. Topics included natural resources, cropping patterns, livestock and poultry ownership, irrigation facilities, use of agricultural machinery, group engagement, and access to services such as healthcare, school, and market. Findings of the village mapping exercise will supplement the baseline survey data and support in the selection of communities for further engagement with Rupantar activities.
