Training on Improved Native Chicken Rearing for the Non-Plot Diversification Pathway

RDRS Bangladesh has conducted training on improved native chicken rearing at the RDRS farmer’s federation in Poschim Sarodubi village under the Borokhata union of Hatibandha Upazila. The objectives of the training were to develop the capacity of the beneficiaries in native chicken rearing and the overall management of chicken rearing in various stages of the chicken cycle. However, thirty-four people were chosen from Poschim Sarodubi and Uttor Borokhata villages in the non-plot diversification pathway. All selected beneficiaries are women.

The training program was held on May 27, 2024. The training started with participation registration and a self-introduction session, facilitated by Pallab Goswami. All the selected beneficiaries attended. The main resource persons were the Upazilla Livestock Officer, the Livestock Extension Officer of Hatibandha Upazila, and Ferdous Hasan, the project manager of the RMTP project, who conducted the core technical sessions based on their expertise. The Upazila Livestock Officer of Hatibandha took sessions on important diseases, symptoms, actions, preventive management, and vaccines or immunizations. The Livestock Extension Officer of Hatibandha took sessions on habitat, feed management, and brooding. The RMTP Manager discussed the importance of native chicken rearing, variety selection, and egg hatching through the Hajol method. Additionally, the government officers delivered motivational speeches for the participants. A question-and-answer session was held with the Upazila Livestock Officer. In this session, participants asked about diseases and vaccinations and shared their experiences.

The training concluded with refreshments for the participants. The RDRS Federation actively assisted in organizing the training and informing attendees about it. In the closing remarks, participants committed to enhancing chicken rearing and applying the techniques they acquired during the training. Kali Ratan Chakma of CIMMYT attended the training, along with other field-level RDRS personnel from a different project.
